POLICE in East New Britain are committed to clamping down on drink-driving in the province.

Provincial police commander Supt Anthony Wagambie said last  Friday in Kokopo that he discussed the drink-driving topic with police station commanders from Kokopo, Rabaul and Kerevat.

He said too many drivers were using the road after drinking alcohol.

He said police officers began conducting road operations last weekend.

“The high number of people consuming alcohol and driving around is a concern to us,” he said.

“It endangers the lives of the public and may cause damage to public property like power posts, side railings and other infrastructure.

“My strict instruction is that if anyone found to be driving under influence of alcohol will be arrested and locked up in the cells before being charged.”

He said police had been lenient on this for too long.

He warned those who intended to drink and drive to be mindful of their own safety as well as those of their passengers.

“Take into consideration other road users. Life only comes once, and when you are gone, you are gone,” he said.

Wagambie said ENB police would work hard to keep the roads safe for all.
