THE Port Moresby Soccer Association’s (PMSA) Premier League was launched yesterday, with National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop as patron of the upgraded premier competition.
Parkop, PMSA president John Wesley Gonjuan, PNG Football Association general secretary Dimirit Mileng and executives of the eight teams were there to witness the unveiling of the Premier League trophy.
The competition will now see the PMSA men’s premier division games as Premier League games.
Gonjuan said the support from Parkop would raise the bar of the competition to it being managed semi-professionally like the National Soccer League (NSL).
Parkop was honoured to become patron and challenged the teams to be competitive as it would strengthen Port Moresby’s status in the annual PNGFA Besta Cup and the NSL.
“The Premier League will see the standard of football change,” Parkop said.
“We want to strengthen football here, so we can beat teams from Morobe that are very competitive in the Besta Cup.”
