MARIJUANA and tobacco confiscated from Boram jail in Wewak, East Sepik, in February were destroyed yesterday at the Correctional Service headquarters in Port Moresby.

Correctional officers Insp Ruben Manamb and Sgt Daniel Makaika burnt the drugs.

The items were confiscated in a raid  by Port Moresby-based correctional officers at Boram headed by Deputy Commissioner Michael Waipo.

The dried marijuana leaves were rolled in packs and sold at the Boram jail for K5 each. The seeds were packed in small containers ready for planting. The tobacco leaves were sold to prisoners for K1 each.

Other prohibited items such as mobile phones, a laptop and daggers were also found.

Prisoners involved in the scandal were transferred later.
