THE Community Health Workers in-service training manual in emergency obstetrics and newborn care and family planning was reviewed during a workshop in Port Moresby last month.

The workshop was organised by the World Health Organisation and featured key trainers from CHW schools, nursing schools and the health department.

They reviewed how workers could be up-skilled to perform emergency procedures to pregnant women and their new-born babies in rural areas.

The review of the in-service training curriculum was an emergency initiative carried out by the health department towards justifying the high maternal mortality rate in the country.

They formed a large part of the front-line health workers in the most remote rural communities and attend to most women during child birth in rural facilities.
