PORT Moresby Rugby League (PRL) dominated the women’s matches at the Southern Confederation Championships at Kwikila in Rigo, Central, yesterday.
It was PRL One who were unbeaten in their pool, recording convincing wins against their opponents.
PRL One hammered Port Moresby Suburban 36-0, PRL Development 30-4 and PRL Two 34- 4 to be crowned Southern champions.
With PNG Orchids (national women’s rugby league team) players Carol Humeu, Veronica Waula, Roswita Kapo, Lila Malabag and Elvina Hetra, PRL One were just too smart and classt for their opposition – even their sister teams in PRL Two and PRL Development proved no match for them.
The Orchids players are aiming to retain their spots in the Southern side for the national championships in Lae on Sept 6.
Other teams who participated at the regional championships were Moresby South, Aroma Coast, Koiari, Kerema and Siouposa.
Meanwhile, Southern Confederation director Gwaibo Mairi has announced the train-on squad for the national championships.
He said the squad of 26 women were selected based on their performance and experience, with a few new faces also picked to push for spots in the final side of 20.
“It’s very exciting to see smaller leagues like Kerema showing a lot of improvement at this year’s regional championships,” Mairi said.
“Our female numbers have increased with the inclusion of Aroma Coast and Siouposa. Hopefully at the next championships, Motu-Koita will come on board.
“We are looking forward to defending our title at the national championships in Lae.”
