PRL teams finish on top

PORT Moresby Rugby League team one and two were declared joint champions of the Southern Confederation senior men’s trials at the National Football Stadium Oval 2 yesterday.
Both PRL teams were unbeaten over the three-day event, capping off their dominantion by having the most number of players named in the Southern Confederation squad.
PRL 2 playmaker Genesis Oresi was voted the Player-of-the-Tournament and recieved a bag of PNG Hunters merchandise courtesy of coach Michael Marum who attended the awards presentation.
The other awards: Best Back – Ezra Gaba (PRL 2), Best Forward – Meninga Keith (PRL 2), Most Improved – Andrew Homoka (Motu Koita), Most Consistent – Jerome Mora (UPNG).
The country’s premier league proved it was still the team to beat despite the rise of several new leages over the last decade in the capital.
In total, 17 affiliated leagues took part in the trials.
The final between PRL 1 and PRL 2 had no score when it was called off becuase of fading light.
Of the other leagues, University of PNG were the most improved getting better from day one to day three making the preliminary final losing 14-0 to PRL 1. In the major semifinal PRL 2 beat Motu Koita 10-0 while UPNG earlier beat Pom Souths 12-6 in the minor semifinal.
