Probe death of marine life

Letters

MADANG people who rely on fish and other sea food for protein and income earning activities are facing difficult times.
The Madang government issued a stern banning the consumption of sea foods due to the unexplained deaths of fish and other sea creatures in recent weeks.
The root cause of the problem is yet to be identified.
Several allegations claimed that this problem was caused by the dumping of waste materials from the mines into the seas, rivers and streams.
Many say the recent slurry spillage at the Basamuk Refinery is the cause of this problem.
Others alleged that a cargo ship that sunk at Sio village, between the borders of Madang and Morobe two years ago, is affecting the marine life.
There are reports of people being sick and at the verge of dying after eating fish. This critical situation has to be immediately investigated as it would affect the population in Madang.
The administration has an urgent task to ensure that quarantine officers carry out their assessment and present their report to the public as convenient as possible.

  • The issue is new to PNG and should be investigated thoroughly using certified professionals/experts to get valid baseline data for PNG so our future generations can use in making good decision in regard to the importance of conducting a practical Environmental Impact Assessment study before granting licensing to such development in fragile environments like the Ramu Nickel Project.
