Probe PNG Teacher’s Association

Letters

WE are concerned over how the Papua New Guinea Teachers’ Association’s (PNGTA) national management committee is misleading the teachers in the country using courts as a means to settle teachers’ issues.
This is not right as it might take long to address their problems.
There are several teachers’ cases pending that need to be addressed by the authorities.
We believe the current national management committee is not recognised as matters are before the court.
We believe that the PNGTA
national president and the other provincial presidents under the current regime who claim to represent the association’s members are directly in contempt of court as the court is yet to decide on their positions.
Teachers are professionals that should be represented by very competent administrators.
The association’s members believe that there was no proper and transparent PNGTA national management committee election conducted in by the Electoral
Commission in 2019-20 as 95 per cent of the financial member teachers never got to vote for their leaders.
PNGTA incumbent five provincial presidents of Enga, Hela, Chimbu, Jiwaka and Eastern Highlands want the Independent Commission Against Corruption (Icac) to investigate the current PNGTA administration on the use of the member’s subscription funds.
We also want Icac to investigate the PNGTA executive election in 2019–2020.
The election conducted by the Electoral Commission and the rush declaration by the industrial register is affecting teachers and creating so much confusion within the union and the financial members.
