Professor title misleading

Letters

A RECENT article on ‘What is the role of the PNGIMR?’ last week in the media raises some questions in my mind as a house wife.
I am sure my question would represent many like me as well.
My simple question is: PNGIMR has many professors and doctors.
Just how do these professionals assist us mothers in our sicknesses when we have gone to every other specialist doctor and need answers from the head specialist?
My general understanding is that professors are the highest-ranking doctors who supervise other doctors under their command. I believe too that these titles are awarded to heads of departments at universities and those who graduate to practice medicine on sick patients at hospitals.
At present there are several professors at the PNGIMR, which is not a university and not a hospital.
I wonder what really their role is when we mothers need specialist treatment?
Can the university responsible for awarding these titles please award other titles rather than ‘professors’?
It is misleading to us and our needs.
