PHASE one of Usino Bundi’s electrification programme in Madang was commissioned on Tuesday.
Mamose rural electrification programme manager Ben Ururu said the phase was part of a 10km project starting from Walium to Usino station, giving power access directly from Yonki.
He said Government establishments such as offices, aid posts, schools, etc, would be the first recipients of the power supply and then to semi-permanent houses.
“In line with PNG Power regulations and policies, it is compulsory that only permanent and semi-permanent houses will have access to electricity,” he said.
“No bush material houses will be installed with power.
“The concept we are currently rolling out is part of the rural housing scheme. I believe the local MP (Jimmy Uguro) has allocated sawmills to each wards.
“We also have a roofing factory in Usino station.
“Communities should make good use of the sawmills.
“Cut timber, get roofing iron then build proper houses which can then be complemented with electricity connection to your house.”
Uguro said power connectivity would support small businesses where food and drinks can be keep stored.
“I want aid posts to be lit up where patients can be treated in light rather than health workers using torches,” he said.
“I want schools to have access to power instead of coming to town to print materials.”
