A Tree Kangaroo Conservation Programme (TKCP) in Morobe dealing with 14 species of tree kangaroos and biodiversity of plants and animals found only in PNG has discovered six new species of frogs, a research has revealed.
TKCP PNG director Dr Lisa Dabek said at the beginning of the project, their focus was on endangered species of tree kangaroos, the biodiversity of the environment and the land usage in the area.
However, over the past 10 years, they had found other animals and plants. One of them was unknown species of amphibians (frogs).
“The six new species found in the YUS (Yopno, Uruwa and Som) local level government of Kabwum protected area,” Dabek said.
“The discovery was headed by Australian scientist, Dr Steven Richards, with landowner rangers.”
