NATIONAL Capital District (NCD) Governor Powes Parkop has launched a women’s art project as part of a 16-day drive for activism to end violence against women.
The project is an interactive art campaign to spread awareness on gender-based violence and encourages citizens to join the fight against the mistreatment of women.
Parkop said the project was for female artists under the “By her, for her supported by him” initiative.
The project was supported through the European Union and United Nations spotlight initiative.
Parkop said in commemorating Human Rights Day (Dec 10), the National Capital District Commission and the Amazing Port Moresby campaign, in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), were honoured to launch the project.
He said they recognised and celebrated the adoption of universal human rights every Dec 10.
He called on citizens to uphold and practice the rights in their day-to-day activities and interactions.
“Let us embrace human rights, each of us and not in our laws and declarations, but in committing ourselves to uphold them in practice in our daily interaction with those around us,” Parkop said.
He said the UN had issued a call to action for human rights reaffirming that a culture of human rights needed to permeate through society.
“For the UNFPA, that means preventing and eliminating discrimination in all our work processes, providing quality services that meet international human rights standards and holding ourselves accountable at all times.
“For us individuals, it means standing up for ourselves and others because that is what defending human rights means.
“When we cannot do it alone, we should do it together and call on the people and institutions obligated to advocate for, defend and promote human rights,” Parkop said.
