OCEANIA Fight Promotions (OFP) has suspended next month’s professional boxing event in response to the coronavirus pandemic that has affected travel and the gathering of large crowds.
The suspension covers the World Boxing Council-Asia Boxing Council lightweight title fight between Raka Kauko Jr and Roldan Aldea which was scheduled for April 25.
OFP director Maryanne Millie said the suspension was in compliance with directives from the Government and relevant authorities.
“Five international bouts with Australian and Philippine boxers confirmed to face our boxers are now suspended,” she said in a statement.
“We are disappointed with the unpleasant outcome but there is little we can do about this unfortunate turn of events.
“OFP will review the situation in consultation with government authorities and other stakeholders, and advise the boxing fraternity and our fans.
“All boxers selected to fight in the event are encouraged to continue their training and preparations at their home or gyms.
“However, observe personal hygiene and adhere to the precautionary measures recommended by the Government and health authorities.”
Preparations for the event were on schedule but directions from the Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation (PNGSF) to shut down sporting facilities in the country for four weeks had forced OFP to suspend all its activities in response to the worldwide pandemic.
An announcement will be made at a later date on when PNGSF lifts the suspension.
