Proper urban planning reduces social problems

PROPER planning is vital for urban expansion to avoid social problems in the community which will also affect the real estate industry, a realtor says.
Century 21 executive chairman Brian Hull said a case in point was the lack of planning in the development of the Taurama customary land in Port Moresby.
“I think a system has to be worked out for this to avoid what has already happened in Taurama Valley – a disaster that happened (because of) no planning from authorities,” he said.
“The next generation who have not had a say in this rushed development of customary land will cause chaos later on.
“This lack of planning also has people from provinces setting up communities in certain areas and this can also lead to chaotic ethnic problems.
“The sanitation and access roads for the residents will also be major headache.
“This is because it was never properly planned with NCDC approval at the start.
Hull said new land had become available with the new roads in Port Moresby but it required proper administration.
“The road from Gerehu to 9-Mile and the Taurama bypass had really opened up access to a large parcel of land,” he said.
“There is no shortage of land in the city at the moment and the Lands Department needs to properly administer all that new land.”
