Restaurant owner sees Port Moresby as full of opportunities

Business

A LOCAL businessman says Port Moresby provides many business opportunities but locals do not have the skills and capital to take advantage of them.
Michael Makap, who recently opened his Den’s Restaurant in the city, said foreigners were making use of the business opportunities.
“Our people lack skills. They are more focused on employment than on entrepreneurship. They lack the experience and capital.”
He said the number of people involved in the cash economy in Port Moresby was bigger than other centres. As such, it is harder to maintain businesses in other centres.
Makap operated a restaurant at his Hagen Airport Motel for the past 17 years where he employed 22 locals.
He provides training for them.
He opened the restaurant last Friday with Western and Filipino dishes available. It also has a bar.
It is located inside the Steamships Compound in Waigani.
“My vision is to create an affordable eating area for the middle class people,” Makap said.
People can buy affordable and healthy meals and dine in a restaurant setting.
