YOU couldn’t wipe the smile off Kalem Mambon’s face yesterday even if you tried – such was her joy and pride as she watched her 25-year-old son receive his bachelor in economics from the University of Papua New Guinea.
Mambon, from Tamaman village in the Leron-Wantoat local level government area of Markham, is a farmer who earns her living by selling peanuts.
Her son Kingtau is one of the 396 students who graduated from the school of business and public policy.
Kingtau said it was not easy for him, especially being raised by a single parent.
He said peanuts were harvested after three months and that was when the semester ended, which was a struggle to save for fees but he thanked his mother.
“I’m running out of words and I don’t know what to say, but thank you to my God and my mother for being there for me and today I’m standing here with tears,” Kingtau said.
He said he was motivated to take up economics because of the situation he was in, his mother had limited resources to support him and he decided to study economics so that he could go home and use the knowledge there.
The graduation was conducted in three sessions started yesterday with the graduates from the school of business and public policy.
The second session today will be for the school of humanities and social sciences and school of natural and physical sciences and tomorrow, for the school of law and school of medicine and health sciences.

  • Congratulations and well done young man on your achievement – mum’s tireless efforts were worth her smiles on your graduation day. Your achievement is hers behind the scenes (would you have made it this far without her and her family) You got a very special mum – hold her close to your heart.

  • Congratulations young man. You made your mama proud, you fulfilled her dreams in you, that is what she wants you to be.

  • A motherly love to her child is more than any valuable thing you name it on top of this planet earth,,your father or older siblings may say anything to against you but your very mother will always defend and comfort you no matter what. She may hold you very close to her heart and share the situation which you are in,,so young man good on you and congrats on your achievement,,,,,so make sure to payback your very mother over what she did to you as a child coming to this far not in monetary means but take good care of her and let her forever smile until the last moment she share with you and closes her eyes, like myself I lost my mother when I was very little boy and never have the opportunity that some of you today by having your mother on your side….love you mama….
