Provincial days promote culture

Letters

THIS is my view representing the voiceless Papua New Guineans.
Many comments have been made when the prime minister announced the abolishment of provincial day celebrations in the nation’s capital.
Papua New Guinea has unique cultures and traditions.
That uniqueness should be showcased to the world and within PNG.
People from the Highlands do not know the culture of the New Guinea Islands.
How can we learn their culture?
Is it in the classrooms?
Be practical. We should know our own cultural background.
Most importantly, culture is another industry that brings income to the nation – though tourism.
People from other parts of the world are attracted by the unique culture of PNG.
Tourists come every year to discover and enjoy with Papua New Guineans.
Locals take part in dancing, singing, decorating and feel motivated to welcome tourists because it brings direct income.
The National Capital District is home to the many who left their homes to settle in Port Moresby.
Port Moresby is a multi-cultural city.
People have the right to celebrate their own cultural days.
Abolishing provincial days brings a gap to the nation.
You cannot squeeze all the 800 languages and 1,000 tribes in one basket.
This will cause problems between provinces.
To promote unity in PNG, each province should celebrate their provincial days in Port Moresby.

  • Sorry mate LK, too bad. I’m with PMJM. Please celebrate Provincial Day in your own provinces. Rightly and meaningfully with due respect of your own culture and flavor that’s where it belongs and not in NCD. Take your family home to your respective provinces before that day where your origin and roots is to take part with all the people and relatives or wantoks from that province you come from and celebrate. Show your wives and children your environment surrounding and stories and histories where your true cultures and customs, dances, bilas and songs came from. It will make sense to your children and it is also educational for them.

  • We live in the world of Change, it is more important to celebrate the changes that are taking place in our mists in the inside outside, these are more relevant than celebrating past events, past is passed, yesterday is gone, cannot bring it back, if we can not bring back yesterday, lets stand today for tomorrow to see the changes, COVID 19 is bringing a great REVOLUTION, we see negative today will see great change, forget about celebrating the past, if there were good things at that time, is for these people, we celebrate good new things we see in our times & season…Lets stand on what we see today for tomorrow & for good of the next generations….
