Provincial days promote unity

Letters

THIS is my view representing the voiceless Papua New Guineans.
Many comments have been made when the prime minister announced the abolishment of provincial day celebrations in the nation’s capital.
Papua New Guinea has unique cultures and traditions.
That uniqueness should be showcased to the world and within PNG.
For instance, people from the Highlands do not know the culture of the New Guinea Islands.
How can we learn their culture?
Is it in the classrooms?
Be practical.
We should know our own cultural background.
Most importantly, culture is another industry that brings income to the nation – though tourism.
People from other parts of the world are attracted by the unique culture of PNG.
Tourists come every year to discover and enjoy with Papua New Guineans.
Locals take part in dancing, singing, decorating and feel motivated to welcome tourists because it brings direct income.
The National Capital District is home to the many who left their homes to settle in Port Moresby.
Port Moresby is a multicultural city.
People have the right to celebrate their own cultural days.
Abolishing provincial days brings a gap to the nation.
You cannot squeeze all the 800 languages and 1,000 tribes in one basket.
This will cause problems between provinces.
To promote unity in PNG, each province should celebrate their provincial days in Port Moresby.

  • That’s a very good point raised but it will happen when each and every Papua New Guinean know how to respect and behave accordingly and celebrate without problems and violence…To my observation people go crazy during provincial days and cause alot of trouble so I suggest it’s better to celebrate it in your own provinces. Still the tourists will go to provinces if only it’s peaceful and safe celebrations.
