Public servants need training to deliver services: Official

PUBLIC servants must undergo high competency-based training to ensure they are competent to deliver government programmes and activities, Community Development and Religion Department secretary Jerry Ubase says.
“We will now provide opportunities for staff who wish to undergo further public management training or enhance their capacity through various competency training programmes offered by the Pacific Institute of Leadership and Governance,” he said at a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing between the department and the institute on Friday.
Ubase said the MoU would address specific training needs and plans for staff and also fulfil the priorities of the Government.
“This MoU will support and ensure the department has a competent and dedicated work force that is able to deliver community development programmes,” he said.
Institute chief executive officer Michael Barobe said: “This programme is long overdue.
“We strive to offer high competency-based training to meet the skill level required by public servants. We are happy to accept and receive staff who wish to take up their progammes even if the department does not have the money to pay for their fees.”
“But, they can be paid later when the funds are available.” He said the institute would be rolling out online training courses to cater for those who wish to study and work at their workplace at a minimum cost.
