Put politics aside and support Kumuls

Letters, Normal

WE all know there are underlying issues with the preparations of the Kumuls.
They have been well documented, including the power struggle at the top.
Such distractions have affected our Four Nations preparations.
I have never been to a Kumul camp, let alone one that Adrian Lam was in charge of.
But players whom I have spoken to in the past said they could sense favouritism on the management’s part.
It is not to say Lam did this but because he was the coach, obviously all fingers pointed at him.
I make this point for the fact that the when a team is selected, the coach and management have the onus to unify the players and make each individual feel a part of something bigger.
An American football college coach once said: “In order to have a winner, the team must have a feeling of unity; every player must put the team first – ahead of personal glory.”
I guess this is the basic foundation to ensure the team performs at optimal level.
I would have liked to see Lam in charge with Stanley Gene assisting him.
New Zealand did that at the World Cup with Stephen Kearney and Wayne Bennett.
NRL clubs do it with Tim Sheens and Royce Simmons, Craig Bellamy and Kearney.
Even the Australian national team do it with Sheens and David Furner.
There has to be a compromise rather than making opinions about who is the better coach.
Both are equal contenders.
Gene has played more than 15 years in the Super League and under various coaches, he has the fundamentals in place.
I am not too sure how it will be demonstrated as this is yet to be seen on the field.
Ideally, Lam should join the team in some capacity before the Four Nations start.
We still need him and if he has a big heart, then I will applaud him for coming back.
I think the current board needs to have an open mind about this and seriously consider some form of input from Lam regardless of what we perceived to have taken place.
At the end of the day, I hope PNG beat Australia in the PM’s XIII clash.
For the sake of our pride and our resilient character, we must now stop the politicking in our game and get behind our team and coach.
The 17 men and coach have been picked and they must stand tall and be counted.
