Questions over safety of river

The Health Department is yet to assure the people of Kikori that water is now safe to use, says environmentalist Saina Jeffrey.
Jeffrey said that after the Highlands earthquake in February, people along the Kikori River were warned not to drink the water until authorities cleared it for consumption.
“Fish is not eaten and water is not used for drinking because of the fear that it may still be contaminated,” he said.
The World Health Organisation and the Health Department did some tests and research on Kikori water quality but reports are not available yet.
“People need to be told quickly that water is now safe to drink or not, and fish is safe to eat or not,” Jeffrey said.
He said people were still afraid to use the water and eat fish from it.
