SPORTS Vice-Minister Wesley Raminai has congratulated the SP Hunters on their 32-30 opening-round win over Souths Logan in the Intrust Super Cup at Davies Park in Brisbane on Sunday.
At half-time, hosts Magpies were in control with a 24-6 lead.
“But the Hunters displayed great courage and amazing fighting spirit to claw their way back and eventually win the game,” Raminai said.
“Coach Matthew Church and his team should be proud of their performance as that is an ideal way for any team to start their season off with a win.”
Raminai said the Hunters had some tough games ahead of them as the coronvirus had been declared a pandemic, affecting activities worldwide and “sports is not going to be spared the actions being undertaken to control its outbreak”.
“The Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League and the Hunters will make an appropriate announcement following discussions with Queensland Rugby League and other stakeholders,” he said.
The Hunters have 12 home and 11 away games. These games are being affected as governments introduce measures to control the spread of the coronavirus.
Meanwhile, Raminai also congratulated the Lae Tigers for retaining the Melanesian Cup.
