SPORTS Vice-Minister Wesley Raminai teed off the Lae leg of the Prime Minister’s Corporate Golf Challenge yesterday on behalf of Prime Minister James Marape.
The event, of which The National is a major sponsor, attracted 34 corporate houses in the Morobe capital.
The challenge is aimed at raising funds to help Team Papua New Guinea prepare for and compete at regional and international events.
The proceeds of this year’s golf event will help sportsmen and women of 13 codes vie for Tokyo Olympic Games selection.
The Games will run from July 23 to Aug 28 next year.
The targeted sports are athletics, boxing, judo, karate, rugby sevens (women), sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon and weightlifting.
“We want Team PNG to represent the country with pride and continue their good form on the international stage,” Raminai said.
The vice minister said it was crucial to have the business community get behind Team PNG and their efforts to raise the funds needed to prepare for the Olympics.
“I commend everyone for contributing to the success of Team PNG and unifying our nation through sports,” he said.
Raminai also commended the PNG Olympic Committee for helping the country’s best athletes pursue their Olympic dreams.
He said the athletes continued to inspire their countrymen and women.
Raminai wished Team PNG all the best in their Olympic preparations.
