THE 13 new council members of the University of PNG have been told to make changes to the institution and improve its programmes to make learning easier for students.
Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Wesley Raminai told a graduation ceremony yesterday that the new council would be headed by chancellor Robert Igara.
The council members endorsed by the National Executive Council are Gerea Aopi, Dr James Yoko, Silas Matoli, Peter Eafeare, Ansca Pakop, Sir Wilson Kamit, Beatrice Mahuru, Vincent Eralia, Dr Miok Komolong, Roger Kara, John Uware, David Kavanamur and Goi Gileng. Raminai told them to revisit some of the university’s core activities and policies.
“I have, through the NEC, reappointed Robert Igara as your interim chancellor and (appointed) highly qualified and distinguished professionals in the private and government sectors (as council members),” he said.
Raminai said they should assist vice-chancellor professor Frank Griffin in making reforms.
“I would like to see some changes that are vital for students’ learning and teaching, more research engagements. And make it your number one business to handle student and staff issues so that we produce quality education,” he said.
He said the pandemic had caused disruptions to the academic year, but the graduation this week had been a testimony to human resolve and mental grit.
