RAMU NiCo Management (MCC) Ltd has been granted permission by the Mines Inspectorate of the Mineral Resources Authority (MRA) to resume logging operations at its Kurumbukari mine site.
Inspector Joseph Umare issued the permission on Monday following a visit to KBK mine site.
The logging cessation order was imposed last August by the inspectorate following a fatality by a logging contractor.
“The matter has been examined in light of what stated in your submissions along with assessments of training and competencies of your logging operators as well as the discussions held with you and your senior management team at your Kurumbukari mine site,” Umare stated in his permission letter to registered mine manager and general manager of KBK mine, Sarimu Kanu.
“The assurance and commitment given by you and your senior management team to take all necessary measures to ensure the health and safety of all persons in your logging operation at KBK mine, I hereby grant you permission to resume logging operation.”
The permission was given with several conditions including the health and safety of logging crews and those who were engaged in the logging activity.
The special mining lease 8 land area allocated for mining activity at Kurumbukari is mostly covered by natural forest and the permission by the mines inspectorate for logging would pave way for the company to clear the area without disruption.
According to the company, the selected logs of economic value would be transported out of the mine site to a designated milling site by a contractor already engaged by the company.
MCC president Wang Jicheng said the safety of its workers and contractors at both KBK mine and Basamuk refinery would remain paramount. “We will continue our assurance and commitment towards the employee’s safety and follow strictly the conditions set by the Inspectorate.”
by being competent in our operation,” Jicheng said.
