Ramu NiCo targets students during mine safety week

THE Ramu NiCo Management (MCC) conducted a safety awareness programme at Mindre Elementary School in the Raicoast district of Madang during the national mining safety week.
According to the company, school children must know “safety and risks” in the very early stages of their lives.
Basamuk refinery site environment officer Kaupa Kia said the Ramu NiCo health, safety and environment unit each year prepared a program including visits to communities within or near the project area. “This year Mindre Elementary School was chosen.” He said. Ramu Nico officers and a medical officer visited the school and explained the different safety laws and regulations to the children.
There were awareness speeches based on the theme “fatal risks and critical controls”.
The programme ended with a presentation of treated mosquito nets, books and sport balls to the school.
The school has four classes with four teachers. It is located about two kilometres from the Ramu NiCo (MCC) Basamuk Refinery in the district.
