LAIWADEN regrouped in the second half to beat Markham 1-0 in the Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League Northern Conference at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium in Lae on Saturday.
In the other conference matches, Besta Papua New Guinea United defeated Morobe United 3-2 and Toti City beat Lahi United 3-1.
In Madang, the game between Tusbab Stallion and Morobe Wawens did not take place. The match has been deferred.
In Lae, the main game between Laiwaden and Markham saw both teams maintaining their composure and matching each other in every department.
Markham’s Morgan Sam, Timmy Rifi, Michael Kelvin and Sasu Gedion tried all they could to penetrate Laiwaden’s defence.
They couldn’t find the mark as Laiwaden defenders Juren Patrick, Jaspar Paul Ray Romo and Darren Poli were equal to the task, spoiling Markham’s chances of scoring.
At the start of the second half, both teams lifted their intensity and it was not long before Laiwaden got the breakthrough they were looking for.
A Laiwaden corner kick saw Gai Womi heading the visitors in front in the 61st minute.
From there on, Laiwaden put on a solid defence to hold out their opponents until the final whistle.
