Rape suspects locked up

FIVE men wanted for allegedly raping the wife of a policeman have been arrested and detained, a senior police officer says.
National Capital District (NCD) Met Supt Perou N’dranou said the suspects were in custody at the Boroko Police Station while the incident which happened at 9-Mile on Friday was being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) with charges to be laid.
Met Supt N’dranou condemned the actions of the suspects and urged men in community to respect women and protect them.
He said rape and violent incidents had the potential to flare up into bigger fights, especially when angry relatives and supporters took the law into their own hands.
Nine-Mile Moitaka Ridge community leader Steven Wawa condemned the incident saying the community had reacted quickly by helping police arrest the suspects.
Wawa said the community had suffered as a result of the actions of these individuals as some of their property had been damaged and destroyed in retaliation.
He said they were sorry and did not want their relationship with the McGregor Police Barracks community to be spoiled by the incident.
Wawa said the Moitaka Ridge community called on the authorities and leaders to help those who had lost property.
He also called for a market place to be built for them to sell produce and goods to earn a living.
Meanwhile, in another incident, a soldier was arrested and charged by traffic police during the weekend and later released on bail.
The soldier was charged with one count of driving without due care and attention, one count of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of resisting police arrest.
It was alleged that the soldier was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser and had cans of beer inside the vehicle when he collided into a parked police dog unit vehicle at 9-Mile.
