Recruit people with decent character

I REFER to the letter “Biased screening at do­mestic terminal” (The Na­tional, Dec 6).
In addition to the comments, those recruited should have the following:
l    Integrity;
l    Honesty; and
l    Reliability.
I had an unfortunate experience last June while returning to Australia when the guards could have pinched my mobile phone from the tray at the scanning machine.
After I collected my luggage, I realised that I left my phone in the tray and asked the guards whether they had seen it.
They said no and even asked me to check my luggage but to no avail.
I told them that I had to make a call to my family.
I did not want to make a big fuss as I prepared for the flight to Brisbane.
Whoever is in charge of recruitment must hire people with good character and not any wantok who fronts up for a job.
They represent the country.
