WITH the increased global focus on climate change and the challenge of adjusting to the Covid-19 pandemic, it has been essential for customers to reduce the use of carbon through harnessing renewable energy, according to Puma Energy PNG Ltd. Country manager and director Hulala Tokome said Puma had started going green by implementing renewable and cleaner sources of energy through the use of solar power at a number of their locations, with diesel as a secondary source and gas (Pumgas) for cooking and cleaning.
“This helps the country become self-sustaining for energy,” he told The National.
Tokome said only eight per cent of the country’s population used gas for cooking so there was an opportunity to adopt gas widely and minimise the use of carbon producing energy sources.
“We are actively supporting a national initiative to switch to cleaner gas from kerosene or wood for cooking and other purposes,” he said.
“We have progressed to work with local MPs that aim to increase the number of households using gas within their respective provinces.” Tokome said the company was phasing out kerosene pumps at retail sites encouraging more customers to switch to Pumagas.
“We are helping new customers connect their cooking stoves safely to LPG bottles as part of our service that includes a commitment to be the lowest cost provider in PNG.”
