LEMUEL Cup reigning champions 2A1F kicked off their campaign on the wrong foot with a 0-1 loss to Joint Venture 1 at Sembo Primary School in Yangoru-Saussia, East Sepik, yesterday.
This is the second season of the soccer tournament with the support of Henimba Limited, a company from the Numbo local-level government area.
Joint Venture 1’s upset win was the opening match of the week-long tournament which was launched by local MP Richard Maru.
The soccer tournament, which has attracted 15 teams across four pools, and a women’s volleyball tourney were initiated by Henimba Limited managing director Andrias Hombo.
He said selections would be made for two soccer teams to compete in the Toti Cup in Lae.
“Selections for the two representative sides will be tough,” Hombo told the teams.
“Cut down on homebrew and marijuana.
“Sports are all about discipline and if you are disciplined, you will help bring sports to a whole new level.
“Show good sportsmanship, go out there and make a difference in the community through sports.
“I have a big vision for sports in the community.
“I want us to go out there and make a difference.
“We have a lot of talents but we need to be committed in order to market our players.”
Maru pledged his support to Hombo and vowed to make the sponsor’s vision a reality in Yangoru-Saussia.
