THE family of the bus driver killed by thugs while on his regular trip between Wewak and Maprik last Friday are urging provincial authorities to find the killers.
Police said Hillary Bakaman, 31, who leaves behind his young wife Nellie and eight-month-old daughter Tiara, was stabbed in Yangoru by two thugs sitting behind the driver’s seat while returning to Maprik from Wewak.
His father Justin Bakaman told The National yesterday from Maprik that all bus drivers from the Central Sepik area would be joining the family during the handing over of the petition to the provincial government.
Bakaman said the family wanted the government to impose the death penalty on such criminals who took away innocent lives.
“We want the Government to take immediate action on those involved in killing my son,” he said.
“The death penalty must be exercised now for such crime.
“We have lost someone we loved, an asset to the family and province.
“We are in pain. My son was helping the people. Why should such thing happen to him?”
Bakaman said they had a meeting on Sunday with the provincial government officers.
The family wants the provincial government to have a police task force team to monitor criminal activities.
“The task force will be looking out for criminals in all of East Sepik and not just Sepik Highway,” he said.
“We also requested the provincial government to help us with the funeral expenses for my son.”
Police said one of the thugs had since been shot dead and others linked to the crime arrested.

  • we the Central Sepik People must be given an opportunity to break away from the main East Sepik. we have enough land mass, population, we are the best producer of cash crops such as cocoa, vanilla and some other producers that often makes and boost the revenue of East Sepik. we need to stand on our own feet as a province of our own in order to avoid such terrible incident because we the Central Sepik people are the simple and humble people as you can see Maprik town implicate the attribute and traits of Central Sepik people for there is no such practices and our town is safe and trouble free. Thus, we appeal to the National Government of Papua New Gunea to take our heartfelt concern in to special consideration to emancipate us from the East Sepik.
