Report: Over 1000 die in road accidents

The World Health Organisation estimates that at least 1200 people die on rods each year.
Works Secretary David Wereh described that as a “huge social and economic cost to our country”.
The UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Works Department will host week-long road safety workshops in Mt Hagen and Kokopo.
Wereh said that road safety was a shared responsibility and it was vital that engineers and contractors in PNG played their parts.
“Accidents are three times more likely at road work sites so the Department of Works is committed to make these work sites safer for all road users,” he said.
“Safer, more reliable roads are at the heart of our operations and I am happy that the Department of Works have been making progress.”
The free workshops will bring together key stakeholders from police, Road Traffic Authority, National Roads Authority and the road contracting industry to develop knowledge and share ideas to strengthen road safety.
The focus behind the partnership is cut down road deaths and injuries by 2020.
