Reserve seats an insult to our women

Letters, Normal

I HAVE been following the debate and comments on the 22 reserve seats for women in parliament.
So far, none has convinced me as to what they will actually do or bring about changes in PNG.
They have not spelled out what the women hope to achieve.
No one, not even Dame Carol Kidu or Sir Michael Somare has given a convincing argument why there is a need to create 22 reserve seats.
We have elected pastors and church leaders hoping they will bring about some changes but to no avail.
I feel those who have advocated and proposed for the 22 reserve seats, including UNDP, Sir Michael, the NEC and women leaders such as Dame Carol ought to apologise to hardworking and intelligent women of PNG for insulting their intelligence.
By having 22 reserve seats, they are saying our women cannot win elections, do not have the brains to stand for elections or do anything for themselves.
Are our women intelligent? You bet.
Are they hard working? Of course.
Are they competitive? Yes.
Can they win elections? Sure, Rooney and Abaijah had done it.
