Retirements affecting manpower

POLICE manpower in Eastern Highlands is down by 64 following retirements in the last two years, commander Supt Michael Welly says.
“Young energetic men and women should apply to join the police force as reservists to serve the people and country,” he said.
Supt Welly said in 2020, a total of 22 policemen and officers went on compulsory retirement and 37 retired last year, while two succumbed to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) and two died from natural causes.
“Our manpower is low,” he said in a media conference.
“We need to boost manpower as soon as we can as General Election 2022 is fast approaching.
“The reservists should be enlisted before the election.”
Supt Welly said the Eastern Highlands government had helped advertised for young men and women to apply to be enlisted as police reservists.
He said those due for retirement last year, would officially be released next month, but “we hope for more young men and women to come and join the police”.
“Recruitment of reservists is strictly on merit, no duplication of certificates and fake qualification papers will be entertained,” he said.
Meanwhile, Welly said the special Christmas and New Yearcrime-prevention operation was still continuing.
“Let us all maintain peace and harmony for all communities,” he said.
