POLICE shot dead a man who was staging a hold-up with five others on the Sepik Highway in East Sepik on Tuesday, says provincial commander Albert Beli.
“Another was wounded and four others escaped when police confronted them at a road block at Belmo village in Yangoru district around 3pm,” he said.
Beli said the thugs had earlier held up two buses and allegedly raped two girls around 11am.
“They stopped the buses, robbed the passengers and ordered the driver of one bus to drive into the bush (where) they allegedly raped two female passengers,” he said.
Nearby villagers were alerted of what was happening and went after the thugs.
They rescued the passengers and reported the matter at the Yangoru police station.
Police later came across the men setting up another road block at the same location, shooting dead one.
The injured one will be charged after he is discharged from hospital.
Police in Yangoru are on the alert after receiving threats from the relatives of the thug who died.
“So I have deployed the Wewak task force to boost manpower at the Yangoru police station,” he said.
“They will be there for an indefinite period. I’m warning people not to threated police officers because the whole police force will hunt you down.”
