PEOPLE living in the Wain-Erap local level government in Nawaeb are excited about the construction of a new road to the remote area of Morobe.

More than 3,000 people living in Wards 10 and 11 are used to walking for miles to reach the main road where they can catch transport to Lae. Nawaeb MP Gisuwat Siniwin on Tuesday allocated K200,000 from the District Services Improvement Programme funds for the project.

“The road will benefit the people of Sadau, Mombang, Bosa, Bokiman, Sasapmang and Silabok who have been carrying heavy loads and walking for distances to catch PMVs to Lae,” Siniwin said.

The 15km road will run from Makong village in Ward 10 to Bosa Primary School in Ward 11.

Bosa is located at the foothills of the Sarawaget Range. More than 100 jubilant villagers gathered at Bayanwang to witness the ground-breaking ceremony.

He warned the people not to disrupt the road construction.

“Don’t ask for compensation if your coffee tree or marita is removed,” he said.

Miz Construction managing director Apolo Tipok said the progress of the work would depend on the weather.

“I estimate it will take us six to seven weeks to complete the road if the weather is fine,” he said.

National volunteer services officer Mack Levi who has been serving in the Bosa area said the road came as a big relief for the locals.

“Road is a big need for them,” Levi said.

“They carry heavy loads and walk for long distances just to catch PMVs to Lae.”
