A SUSPECT in an armed robbery was shot dead and another wounded along the west coast on the Sepik Highway between Smain and Makopin villages in Wewak district, East Sepik early on Monday.
East Sepik police Commander Supt Albert Beli said the suspects were armed and were trying to stop a vehicle that was travelling from Aitape in West Sepik to Wewak when a policeman in plain clothes in the vehicle shot the armed men.
One died and the wounded man was admitted at Boram Hospital.
“I had issued restraining orders to the two villages not to do any criminal activities along the highway because it is a public highway that serves both Sepik provinces.
“The road must be left free for the vehicles to travel,” Beli said.
He said when the driver saw the armed men, he tried to speed up but they pointed the gun at him and told him to stop.
The policeman shot one of the men and the other tried to fire back at him but he too was shot. The first one died and the second was wounded and later taken to hospital.
Beli said in another incident a man was allegedly killed by his elder son at Kweruo village in Kubilia after the son tried to help stop his parents arguing.
He said the body was in the village waiting for post-mortem. The deceased was identified as Bore Kori.
Beli said the morgue at Boram was full and now closed for an indefinite period.
