THE annual Rosso Cup was launched on Wednesday along with the rollout of sports equipment in communities and suburbs in Lae.
This year’s festive period will see 17 sporting venues being used for touch, nines rugby league, soccer and volleyball competitions.
Cup coordinator Andrew Ari said this year’s event had been extended to all wards in Lae Urban and the Ahi local-level government area, where competitions would run until the end of February.
“This is a pathway to expose and promote talented sportsmen and women, and keep our communities away from drugs and illegal activities during the festivities,” he said.
The former touch representative thanked Lae MP John Rosso for the initiative.
Rosso said: “I want to ensure that Lae is safe and residents celebrate Christmas in peace and unity in their communities.”
The event will begin this weekend with K20,000 in prizes on offer for each of the 17 venues.
Meanwhile, a mountain bike contest will round out the Cup with the event set for the Easter weekend in March.
