MADANG police commander acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang has warned that police will soon start arresting people who fail to adhere to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic public health protocols.
“We will initiate arrests soon, according to the provisions provided by the Pandemic Act,” he said.
Acting Supt Rubiang advised people in Madang to adhere strictly to the New Normal protocols.
He issued the warning after Northern commander ACP Peter Guinness said police would be working closely with health workers to protect the people from contracting and dying from Covid-19.
“What we are seeing in other provinces such as Eastern Highlands, Morobe and elsewhere that had reported high number death rates,” acting Supt Rubiang said. “This should make us think about how we should protect ourselves.
“We are connected by road to Morobe and to the Highlands provinces.
“If we are not careful, we will regret when people start falling sick and die.
“We also do not have equipment to help the sick,” he added.
Acting Supt Rubiang said he would be meeting with all police section commanders in the province on how best to help health workers fight the virus.
“The health of the people is our priority and everyone must listen and obey the simple Covid-19 protocols,” he said.
