THE Mantas sevens team in Port Moresby has decided to prepare their players to meet their financial needs by choosing to save with Nasfund Contributors Savings and Loans Society (ncsl) to shift their focus to self-sustaining activities after sports.
Through senior player Constantine Bais, 12 players now have savings accounts which they can use to support themselves when they run into unplanned injury, need new sporting gear or save for future needs.
Mantas have produced some notable players such as Pukpuks finisher Emil Latumahina and other sevens and 15s talent in Debe Keith Tore, Shallendra Birney and Junias Sabatha.
Bais, who mentored and taught his fellow team players the importance of setting aside some savings, said most players are in their early 20s, which was a good time to start saving.
He encouraged players to consider life after rugby and saving money now would ensure a better transition back into society knowing they were able to support themselves.
