Rugby to review programmes, activities over virus

PAPUA New Guinea Rugby Union (PNGRU) is continuing the suspension of its activities with the sport’s interim body to review its programmes on Thursday.
PNGRU administrator Ian Liveras told The National that the body was mindful of the impact of the nationwide state of emergency over the Covid-19 pandemic and the Government’s orders against gatherings.
“All national and provincial programmes remain suspended,” he said.
“The situation will be reviewed on Thursday.
“Following the review, we will advise all provincial unions accordingly.
“The resumption of any type of rugby activity will be pursuant to the directions received from the Government and World Rugby.”
In an earlier statement, PNGRU said May had been proposed for competitions to resume.
It said provincial unions would adopt a revised season, however, that would depend on the Government and the State of Emergency controller.
PNGRU said the safety and welfare of players, officials and the community were important.
“It is important that we keep calm, listen to the advice from relevant authorities, and take responsibility of ourselves, our families and our communities,” PNGRU interim chairman Syd Yates said.
Meanwhile, PNGRU training and education coordinator Sailosi Druma has been in contact with provincial unions regarding PNGRU’s online component of rugby education.
