Touch Football Papua New Guinea (TFPNG) has set September to host its national men’s championship with a change in venue from New Ireland to Morobe following a decision by executives of the sport’s governing body.
TFPNG secretary David Max told The National that the host association in Kavieng was unable to meet the requirements for the championship and had pulled out, leaving Lae as the next option for the tournament.
“Kavieng has pulled out as host due to lack of financial support and other circumstances,” he said.
“There are other codes that are going to have tournaments there later in the year.
“Lae was the host runner-up at the annual general meeting in Port Moresby in November.
“We are speaking with Lae Corporate Touch Association president Steven Kuimp, who has agreed to host the championship.
“We’re awaiting the official confirmation from TFPNG.
“It will depend on the recommendations from the national government via the PNG Sports Foundation.”
Max said the deadline for TFPNG’s annual affiliation would be extended. “The championship is still scheduled for Sept 13-16,” he said.
“The only thing that will be postponed will be the annual affiliation from TFPNG affiliates which was supposed to be on June 30.
“There will be a grace period of a month or two, pending the nationwide state of emergency (SOE) and the coronavirus pandemic restrictions.
“All affiliates and players must adhere to SOE orders and practise common sense during this trying times, like observing social distancing and staying indoors.”
