CENTRAL and West New Britain native Francis Ruma has been named as the Port Moresby Rugby Football League (POMRFL) referee of the year.
POMRFL chairman Dr James Naipao, and board members Wari Varage and Manu Lofena voted Ruma for his consistency and commitment all season despite the Covid-19 distractions.
Ruma is following in the footsteps of his father who was once a senior referee in Lae.
“Refereeing is not new to me,” the 39-year-old said.
“Development comes with commitment and dedication.
“Transparency should be encouraged in any game.
“Referees must do their job without fear or favour.”
Tubusereia villager Hanua Rupa, who has made a remarkable improvement in the Digicel Cup, was named as the most improved referee of the year.
Rupa refereed Sunday’s A-Grade grand final between Tarangau and Butterflies at the Oil Search National Football Stadium.
Former National Rugby League referee Shayne Hayne, who watched the match via live stream, congratulated Rupa and encouraged him to continue improving.
