PAPUA New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) commander Major-General Gilbert Toropo has dispelled rumours on social media regarding an alleged locking of PNGDF armories by Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel.
Maj-Gen Toropo, in a statement on Friday, said people needed to check with the PNGDF before spreading false and unfounded information, creating a panic when commenting on issues of national security.
He said this when responding to rumours circulating on the social media accusing members of the Australian Defence Force of entering PNGDF establishments and changing locks at the armories.
“PNGDF controls its own combination in all armories and I am very disappointed with people circulating unsubstantiated information,” he said.
“We are undergoing a major exercise to re-build and upgrade our armories around the country and we have completed those for the Port Moresby-based unit.
“We are now working on those for the Northern units.”
