A VEHICLE belonging to the Bogia district administration was damaged after it collided with the Sumkar ambulance at Koroba village near Walium along the Lae-Madang highway on Saturday.
Walium police said the driver of the Bogia vehicle was allegedly drunk and was driving on the wrong lane which caused the collision.
The vehicle hit the ambulance and rolled several times but no fatalities were recorded.
Madang police commander acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang said the driver of the Bogia vehicle had been identified and an arrest would be made soon when Walium police officers travel to Madang town to continue their investigation.
“Traffic accidents are happening daily and most of these accidents are alcohol-related,” he said.
“This accident also happened because the driver of the Bogia vehicle was under the influence of liquor.”
Acting Supt Rubiang said it was fortunate that no one died and the ambulance was not damaged, however, the Bogia vehicle was damaged badly.
He said the driver and others left the scene before police arrived.
The ambulance driver and the others were all safe.
He said many people had died along that highway in traffic accident so drivers needed to be careful when driving.
He also cautioned drivers in Madang to drive carefully as the town was undergoing road maintenance in some areas.
