Sad day for Papua New Guineans

Letters

JAN 10 is going to go down the archives of Papua New Guinea as one of the saddest days for majority of Papua New Guineans, who have watched our nation’s pride, the capital city, Port Moresby, go down to a moment of anarchy rule, as thousands ransacked shops and offices and looted and burnt, which resulted in tens of millions Kina in business losses and more importantly, loss of lives.
We squarely hold it against PNG Police Constabulary Leadership and its entire hierarchy within the capital city command, for what had occurred today.
A broadcast that was said to come from a Crime Watch Centre at Boroko Police Station group, went viral stating that the police in the city is withdrawing all its constitutional duty to protect us and that we are on our own to defend ourselves from the elements.
All supermarkets and stores were prey in the first instance as masses marched at will and chased security guards and ransacked the premises and burnt the buildings.
They knew no police would be responding to any call for help from the store management or owner.
We feel for all the workers and management who were in the story when this tsunami occurred.
It is very sad to see all City Pharmacy Limited (CPL) Group supermarkets looted and burnt to the ground.
CPL is listed company on the PNG Stock exchange and solely owned by Papua New Guineans through superfunds and other PNG owned companies.
The choice of PNG as a safe place to invest has taken 20 years back, sending out development aspirations back into the dark ages.
We call on all PNGC leadership in the city command, to put down your badges in shame and resign.
