THE Lae district has given K15,000 to help the Salvation Army in its Streets Ministry which caters for unfortunate youths.

The ministry is involved in the rehabilitation, education and development of unfortunate and underprivileged children in Lae.

The K15,000 came from the joint district planning and budget priorities committee.

The ministry, which was set up in 2008, has been helping street kids, return to classes, with some now attending primary and secondary schools in Lae. Others have been helped to get jobs.

They use the Salvation Army’s Eriku transit house during the day to study basic numeracy and literacy plus Bible lessons.

They receive counselling and Boys Scouts training and are provided free meals on Fridays.Salvation Army’s Major George Karogo said 70 children and teenagers are benefitting from the ministry.

Tutor Stanley Timai said the programme included tracking down children when they stopped attending the half-day classes. It follows up on those enrolled in schools.

“We have one former student from this ministry, a girl, who is now doing her second year in nursing at the Lae Nursing College, eight are currently working fulltime, four are attending Lae Secondary School, eight at Markham Road Primary School,” Timai said.

Karogo received the K15,000 from Lae MP Loujaya Kouza’s secretary, retired Salvation Army Major Sere Kala.
