Saonu plans review of scholarship

THE Morobe government will review the Gerson-Solulu scholarship programme so that the recipients contribute something back to the province.
Governor Ginson Saonu said the government would set up a working committee to review it.
“The scholarship is subject to review. We will come up with changes on funding and policy,” Saonu said.
The former teacher said education was his concern.
Saonu said some recipients of the scholarship failed to give anything back to the province which had paid their fees in the colleges and universities.
“Past recipients did not make any input to the province, do not even contribute anything back to the programme,” he said.
“We are serious about growing manpower. But there’s no opportunities provided for recipients after graduation. So we will review the scholarship to see that it serves people and the recipients contribute back to the province’s development after graduation if they are not working in Morobe.”
He said a scholarship budget would be locked away in a separate account for scholarship purposes only.
“We don’t want the money to be used up by the administration for natural disasters or ethnic clashes during the year, and when it comes to the beginning of an academic year we start looking for money,” he said.
Saonu said he did not want to hear students being turned away from registration because of a delay in the payment of fees.
