OPPOSITION MP Walter Schnau-belt welcomes the news that the passengers and 12 crew members of the Air Niugini plane which crashed in Cruuk, Federated States of Micronesia, on Friday are safe.
“One can only imagine the trauma that the passengers (went) through (with the) plane ending up in the lagoon and sinking,” Schnaubelt said.
“We are praying for all those traumatised by this experience. They deserve the nation’s full support. Air Niugini had an unblemished safety record and thus was a matter of national pride among generations of Papua New Guineans who grew up with our flag carrier. If there is one thing we can be proud of, it would be the actions of the Air Niugini crew that got everyone out safely.
“The damage from this crash will flow through to PNG’s reputation as an ideal tourism destination.
“Air Niugini had only launched its first direct flight between Narita in Japan and Chuck in the Federated State of Micronesia.”
